This is a question that comes up time and time again because people need laptops for work, school, or for activities such as surfing the Internet, watching movies, playing games, etc. It’s also a matter of personal opinion what you think is reliable. Let’s take a look at some facts from reliability surveys.
In the December 2009 issue of PC World, they stated that their survey showed that “Dell and Toshiba were the most reliable manufacturers”
In February 2012, a Consumer Reports reader survey stated that Apple laptops had some of the highest numbers of problems per 100 machines as reported by laptop owners. However, Macs generally cost more money than Windows laptops with the same specs, which means that statistically speaking a Mac owner is less likely to have a problem because they can afford a higher quality laptop.
In April 2009, an online survey by FixYa.com showed Dell laptops as having the most problems among laptop owners, and it also stated that HP ranked as #1 in customer satisfaction.
“If you want the most reliable laptop, buy a MacBook Pro.”
Now let’s look at some real-life examples of when laptops are down for the count. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but it can give you an idea of what might be wrong with your laptop if something happens.
Hp Pavilion G6 Laptop – Can’t install new updates Error 0x80070643, then shuts down.
MacBook Pro Retina – Black screen/no image to monitor or TV; motherboard failed because the battery was loose.
Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5047 laptop – Won’t power on, black screen.
Dell Studio 1537 – Boots up to windows and then shuts down. The power light turns orange and the fan spins for a few seconds before it shuts off completely.
MacBook Pro – The laptop shuts down soon after powering on. Smells like something is burned, won’t boot up at all.
In these cases, the laptop was determined to have failed due to motherboard or hard drive problems. In some cases, a virus can cause slowdowns and crashes as well.
If you’re looking for a new laptop always check the actual owner ratings online before buying anything from brand names that you might recognize. It is not always a good idea to get information about a product from the manufacturer. Sometimes it is better to go online and see what other people are saying about the product. This way, you can get unbiased information.
If you want a laptop that will last a long time without problems, buy one of the brands that tend to have fewer failures. Many reliable brands are actually on the lower end of the price scale, so if you’re looking for high quality but don’t want to spend a fortune, take a look at some of the best-selling laptops on Amazon. They will give you many options so it’s easy to pick one that fits your needs.
